Aromatherapy - how does it work and which oil should I use?

How does aromatherapy work?

Its a word that is so common-place in spas & salons now but many people still dont know the benefits of regularly using essential oils. Derived from plant extracts, essential oils enter our bodies either through absorption through the skin, or inhalation via the nose. They can affect the body through several systems and pathways and therefore create an effect much more quickly than taking medication.

During a massage essential oils are applied to the skin where they are absorbed and travel around the body via the bloodstream. In this way they are able to deliver a range of benefits to the body’s systems and organs. The absorption rate is increased by the actual massage, as this increases the circulation in that area of the body.

Inhaling certain essential oils can make us feel calmer or more alert almost instantly.  In many cases essential oils will enter the body both via absorption through the skin and via inhalation; this can have a compounded positive effect. We like to do this with our treatments through inhalations as well as the massage itself.

Which aromatherapy oils do we use?

We have our own signature range of 4 blended aromatherapy oils that we now use in all of our treatments. Created just for us these have taken over a year to develop and perfect! These are also available to purchase to use at home. Below we go into each oil in a bit more detail to give you the inside knowledge!

Calm

This oil contains Cedarwood, Sandalwood & Rose all help unwind and reduce anxiety.  Sweet Orange uplifts the mind and helps aid sleep. We have had rave reviews on this oil since its launch last month with clients reporting it has helped them treat insomnia!

Focus

KEY BENEFITS - Revitalising/Uplifting/Relieves Stress/Boosts mind/Good for depression

One off our absolute favourite blends! Bergamot helps alleviate pain and relieve stress. Grapefruit & Lime boost mood & re-energise.

Balance

KEY BENEFITS - Antioxidant boosting/aids digestion/detoxifying

Sweet Orange & Juniperberry are know to cleanse the system & aid digestion. Patchouli helps the metabolic system to balance energy levels. Patchouli fans will love this blend and its great for using on a detox program.

Strength

KEY BENEFITS - warming/anti-inflammatory/soothes & reduces pain

Clove has anti inflammatory benefits. Rosemary works to increase circulation and reduce pain. Black pepper warms and reduces pain in joints & muscles.  Perfect for those suffering joint or muscular pain. Used in our deep tissue massage!

How can you use the Luxe aromatherapy body oils at home?

To use as a body oil warm a small amount of oil in the palms of your hands and massage into damp skin, working towards the heart. As a bath oil add a capful to running water but take care as the bath may become slippy.
